Lakeroad Ferret Farm Rescue Shelter

I started my shelter in September of 1995; unbeknownst to me it was a far, far cry from where I was going and how far I have come. It was not long after I started my shelter I got to know Mary, Doc. Edwards, Jeanne, and Pat very well. Jeanne and Mary's club took me under their wing, let me limp along when it was appropriate and let me lean on them when I needed to. Pat having been in shelter for years took my late night frantic calls as to what to do with the sick ferret I had in my arms.

I am very fortunate to have had the expertise to back me as I blundered through the first few years of sheltering without a real clue as to how I thought I could manage to shelter ferrets on my own.

Since then I have grown in knowledge, grown in ability to teach the new ferret owner how to avoid some of the pitfalls that are inevitable and hard to avoid, as well as in the operation of this shelter. I have become a large operation in one respect not as large as some but for a single person running the shelter it is a large operation. I have had as many as 48 ferrets and as few at 20 in the shelter at one time. My adoption rate is slow but the success rate is 100%. Once a human has adopted from me they will always be able to adopt from me. I have a rigorous adoption policy but the ferrets that are here have had enough change in their lives they do not need more than this last placement. Once I place the ferret in that new home they will be there for the remainder of their lives.

I have helped in some major rescues, gotten to know other shelter operators, been to and spoken at some ferret events. I am now a part of the International Ferret Congress organization as their official spokes person and vendor coordinator. My ability to help others and to educate has grown by leaps and bounds as I have become known in the ferret community. I have written some articles that are helpful to new owners, I am available to anyone that needs to ask questions or to clarify information. I do my best to make life easier on the ferret and owners that are in need. I am going to continue to be involved in sheltering, education and learning for as long as I am able to keep the shelter in good condition and the kids with quality care. The financial drain on shelters is phenomenal but I am blessed with so very many shelter friends that I just place what we need in my God Box and it comes when we need it. I have made many wonderful friends throughout the years of sheltering, had so many humans find love and companionship with fuzz butts from here and get to laugh and love the kids that spend their lives here with me for what ever time they have on this earth. This shelter is my life, it is my passion; it is my love. I am so blessed to be able to do what I love to do.

Be sure to check out the shelter's great online store! Many cool things for both ferrets and humans. And it supports a worthy cause.
